You got certified. You're ready to train. But you have ZERO clients. Here's the exact 30-day system I used to get my first 3 paying clients—and the same system I teach new trainers that works in 2026.
Most new trainers think they need:
You don't need any of that for your first 3 clients.
What you actually need:
That's it. I got my first 3 clients with ZERO online presence. Just showed up, helped people, and asked.
This system is broken into 4 weeks with specific actions each week:
Goal: Get in front of 50+ people
Action #1: Go to the Gym (Your Hunting Ground)
If you work at a gym: Perfect, you're already there.
If you don't: Get a membership at a busy commercial gym (24 Hour, LA Fitness, local gym).
Schedule: Show up same time every day (6-8 AM or 5-7 PM peak hours)
Why: Consistency = people start recognizing you. Familiarity builds trust.
Action #2: Be the Friendliest Person There
Don't be the guy with headphones in, never making eye contact.
Do this:
Goal: Have 10+ small interactions per week. Build social capital.
Action #3: Wear Something Identifiable
Branded shirt (even if it's just "Personal Trainer" on the back). Makes you approachable.
People WILL come up and ask questions. Be helpful, don't try to sell yet.
Week 1 Result: People know you exist, you're friendly, you're a trainer.
Goal: Train 3-5 people for FREE and get results
The Free Client Strategy:
Find 3 people who need help (friends, family, gym acquaintances).
The pitch:
"Hey, I'm building my training business and need before/after photos for my portfolio. I'll train you for free for 4 weeks if you commit to showing up 3x/week and following my nutrition plan. Deal?"
Why this works:
Who to choose:
Document everything:
Week 2 Result: 3-5 free clients training, building your skills and future testimonials.
Goal: Show people you get results
Action #1: Create Instagram/Facebook (Basic)
Minimum viable profile:
Content to post (Week 3):
That's 5 posts. Don't overthink it.
Action #2: Join Local Facebook Groups
Search Facebook for:
Join 5-10 groups. Don't spam yet. Just be active:
Action #3: Google My Business Listing (Free)
Create a free Google My Business profile. People search "personal trainer near me"—you want to show up.
Takes 10 minutes. Huge ROI.
Week 3 Result: Basic online presence, local visibility increasing.
Goal: Get 3 paying clients
Strategy #1: The Warm Outreach (Easiest First Client)
Text 20 people in your phone:
The message:
"Hey! I'm officially launching my personal training business. I'm taking on 3 clients this month at a special rate ($100/month for 8 sessions). Know you've mentioned wanting to get in shape—would you be interested or know anyone who would be?"
Who to text:
Expected response rate: 2-3 people say yes or refer someone
Strategy #2: The Gym Floor Approach
Week 4, you're at the gym daily. People recognize you now.
The natural opening:
When someone asks you a question (form, exercise, nutrition), help them. Then:
"Actually, I'm a personal trainer and I'm taking on 2 more clients this month. I'd love to help you reach your goals if you're interested. Want to do a free assessment this week?"
Free assessment = sales consultation
Close rate: If they show up to assessment, 50-70% close.
Strategy #3: Post in Local Facebook Groups (NOW)
You've been helpful in groups for 1-2 weeks. Now you can post your service.
Sample Post:
"Hey [group name]! I'm a certified personal trainer here in [city] and I'm taking on 3 new clients this month. Specializing in [specific thing - fat loss for busy moms, strength for men over 40, etc.].
If you're tired of starting and stopping diets, I'll create a custom plan that actually fits your life.
First session free to see if we're a good fit. DM me if interested!"
Post this in 3-5 local groups.
Expected: 5-10 DMs. 1-2 convert to clients.
Week 4 Result: 3+ paying clients locked in.
Don't charge too little. $20/session screams "I'm not confident."
Don't charge too much. $150/session is hard to justify with zero testimonials.
The sweet spot for first 3 clients: $100-125 per month for 8 sessions
That's $50-62 per session (2x/week). Affordable, but not cheap.
Frame it as an introductory rate:
"My normal rate will be $150/month, but for my first 3 clients I'm offering $100/month."
Creates urgency. People feel like they're getting a deal.
Most new trainers SUCK at this because they're afraid to "sell."
Reframe: You're not selling. You're helping them decide if you're the right solution to their problem.
The consultation structure:
1. Build rapport (5 min)
2. Identify the problem (5 min)
3. Present the solution (5 min)
4. Handle objections (2 min)
5. Close (1 min)
"I have 2 spots left this month. Want to get started?"
Assumptive close. Don't ask "Do you want to sign up?" Ask "When do you want to start?"
Mistake #1: Waiting to Be Perfect
"I need to finish my website, get my LLC, design a logo…"
NO. You need 3 clients. Get them first. Build business infrastructure later.
Mistake #2: Only Marketing Online
Instagram posts with 12 followers won't get you clients.
In-person >> online for first 3 clients. Show up to the gym. Talk to people.
Mistake #3: Not Asking for Referrals
Your free clients? Ask them to refer you.
"Hey, I'm building my business. If you know anyone looking to get in shape, I'd really appreciate the referral."
60% of my first 10 clients came from referrals.
Mistake #4: Training for Free Forever
Free clients should transition to paid OR refer paying clients.
After 4 weeks: "I've loved training you. My rate is $100/month if you want to continue, or if you know anyone who'd benefit from training, I'd appreciate the referral."
Don't get stuck training 10 people for free.
Week 1:
Week 2:
Week 3:
Week 4:
Client #1: Friend from church (Week 1)
He mentioned wanting to lose weight. I offered to help for free for 2 weeks, then pitched $100/month. He signed up.
Client #2: Guy at gym (Week 2)
Helped him with squat form. Built rapport over 2 weeks. Offered free assessment. Closed him at $100/month.
Client #3: Facebook group post (Week 3)
Posted in local moms group. Got 8 DMs. Closed 1 of them at $125/month (she was more motivated).
Total time investment: 30 days
Total ad spend: $0
Result: $325/month recurring revenue
This system gets you started. But don't stop at 3.
Next steps (Month 2-3):
By month 3, you should have 6-10 clients. That's $1,000-1,500/month.
By month 6, you should have 12-15 clients. That's $2,000-3,000/month.
The key: Don't stop the activities that got you your first 3 clients.
Getting your first 3 clients is simple (not easy):
No fancy website. No huge following. Just show up, help people, and ask.
You don't need to be perfect. You just need to start.
I coach personal trainers on getting clients, pricing, and scaling. If you're stuck at 0-5 clients, I can help you get to 10-15 in 90 days.
