What Most Trainers Get Wrong

Too many trainers think their job is:

Real personal training is about the RELATIONSHIP.

Why Support Matters More Than Programming

Client A: Trained with a "rep counter" trainer who just said "good job" and moved on.
Result: Quit after 8 weeks. Lost motivation. Felt like just another number.

Client B: Trained with someone who asked "How are you REALLY doing?" and listened to the answer.
Result: Still training 3 years later. Lost 60 lbs. Transformed their life.

Same program. Different relationship. Completely different outcome.

People don't quit because the workouts are hard. They quit because they don't feel seen, heard, or supported.

What "Being Personal" Actually Looks Like

It's Listening—Really Listening

Not just "How was your weekend?" while looking at your phone.

Real listening means:

I ask: "What's going on? You want to talk about it?" Sometimes they do. Sometimes that 5-minute conversation matters more than the next exercise.

Because when someone feels HEARD, they show up differently. They trust you. They push harder. They stay longer.

It's Being Their Biggest Cheerleader

Your clients are doubting themselves constantly:

Your job is to remind them of their progress when they can't see it themselves.

"You couldn't do a single pushup 8 weeks ago. Today you did 10. That's not nothing. That's incredible."

Celebrate EVERY win:

Most people don't have someone in their life who celebrates their fitness wins. Be that person.

It's Holding Space for the Hard Stuff

Training sessions aren't always about fitness. Sometimes they're therapy disguised as workouts.

I've had clients:

In those moments, the workout doesn't matter. The person does.

I stop. I listen. I hold space. Sometimes we talk for 20 minutes and only train for 20.

Because that's what they needed that day. And that's what "personal" training means.

It's Showing Up for Them (Even When They Don't Show Up for Themselves)

Your clients will have bad weeks:

Most trainers get frustrated. I get curious.

"Hey, I noticed you missed this week. You okay? What's going on?"

Usually, there's a reason:

They don't need judgment. They need support.

"Life happens. Let's get you back on track. What's one thing you CAN do this week?"

That text? That check-in? That matters more than any workout program.

It's Adapting to THEIR Life, Not Your Program

I've had sessions where:

The program serves the PERSON. Not the other way around.

Some trainers get rigid: "The program says squats today, so we're doing squats."

I get flexible: "You look exhausted. What do you NEED today?"

Because I'm training a human being, not a robot.

The Moments That Matter Most

The session where a client finally did their first unassisted pull-up:

She'd been trying for 6 months. Every session, we worked on it. Every session, she got a little closer. Then one day, she pulled herself up. We both screamed. She cried. I cried.

That moment? That's why I do this.

The text at 11 PM:

"I almost binged tonight. I was so close. But I thought about what you said—one decision at a time. I went for a walk instead. Thank you."

THAT is impact. That's the relationship at work.

The client who said:

"You're the only person in my life who believes in me more than I believe in myself."

That's the job. That's the "personal" in personal training.

What Great Trainers Actually Do

Great trainers don't just program workouts. They:

Why it matters: It shows you're not just a client—you're a person they genuinely care about.

2. Check In Between Sessions

Why it matters: Shows they're thinking about you beyond the hour you're together.

3. Celebrate Your Non-Scale Victories

Why it matters: The scale doesn't tell the full story. THEY see the full story.

4. Adjust Their Communication to YOU

Great trainers adapt to what YOU need, not what they prefer.

5. Create a Safe Space to Fail

"I ate like shit this week."

Bad trainer: "You need to have more discipline."

Good trainer: "What happened? Let's figure out what triggered it and make a plan so it doesn't happen again."

Judgment kills progress. Support creates it.

Why the Relationship IS the Transformation

Here's the truth: Most clients don't fail because they don't know what to do. They fail because they don't feel supported while doing it.

The relationship provides:

Accountability (Not Guilt)

You show up because you don't want to let them down. Not because you feel guilty. Because they genuinely care about your progress.

Belief (When Yours Runs Out)

On the days you want to quit, they remind you why you started. They believe in you when you can't believe in yourself.

Safety (To Be Imperfect)

You can have a bad week, miss workouts, eat poorly—and they'll still support you. No judgment. Just problem-solving.

Celebration (Of Every Win)

They see your progress before you do. They celebrate the small wins that keep you going when the big wins feel far away.

That's not a trainer-client relationship. That's a partnership. And THAT is what creates lasting transformation.

What to Look for in a Personal Trainer

Don't hire someone based on their certifications or Instagram followers. Hire someone who:

The right trainer doesn't just change your body. They change your relationship with yourself.
